The long-term dialogue between the two artists Niklas Holmgren and Jwan Yosef was first manifested in the exhibition Mothers (Stockholm, 2021) where the artists opened up about their unconditional and unfiltered love for their matriarchs. In their second exhibition together, I Promise to Listen (Venice, 2022) the artists instead approach the complexity of intimacy and affection between lovers.

Holmgren paintings capsule the intimate moments where time, the here and now, becomes endless. The brushstrokes capture the delicate properties of skin, flesh, and blood with ease. The light sipping through the ears, or illuminating the hands that rest in the book, echoes of what is outside of the canvas, the unspoken. The imagery together composes what seems to be a secret overture.

Yosef uses the brushstrokes in gray, misty shades, to layer the surface that creates a three-dimensional sculptural effect and a reductive style. The motif comes near the viewer and is not only blown up but also cropped very tightly, and the back of the heads seem to almost burst the canvas. The two persons’ ears are so close to each other but are still separated, nearly severed as if they were at one point part of the same body. As if there is an imminent need to get closer and closer in a dance of seduction and desire.

The works in I Promise to Listen oscillate the tensions created between the splendor of tender love and raw carnal desire; chiaroscuro and grisaille; depth and surface; communication and isolation. Combined they create a song of love, un chant d’amour.

Il lungo dialogo tra Niklas Holmgren e Jwan Yosef ha preso forma per la prima volta nella mostra Mothers (Stoccolma, 2021), nella quale i due artisti hanno confessato il loro amore incondizionato e senza filtri per le rispettive matriarche. Nella loro seconda mostra insieme, I Promise to Listen (Venezia, 2022), Holmgren e Yosef si avvicinano invece al complesso tema dell’intimità e dell’affetto tra amanti.

I dipinti di Holmgren incapsulano momenti intimi nei quali il tempo, il qui ed ora, diventa infinito. Con abilità, le sue pennellate catturano le qualità delicate della pelle, della carne e del sangue. La luce si infiltra attraverso le orecchie o illumina le mani che riposano sulle pagine di un libro, evocando ciò che accade in silenzio al di fuori dalla tela. L'insieme delle immagini suggerisce un sorta di ouverture, uno spiraglio su una dimensione segreta. 

Yosef usa pennellate grigie e nebbiose, che si stratificano sulla superficie del dipinto per creare, in stile riduttivo, un effetto scultoreo tridimensionale. Il soggetto si avvicina allo spettatore e non è solamente ingrandito ed esasperato, ma viene addirittura ritagliato dalle inquadrature anguste. É quasi come se la parte posteriore dei crani potesse far scoppiare la struttura rigida della tela, come se ci fosse un bisogno imminente di avvicinarsi sempre di più, in una danza di seduzione e di desiderio. Le orecchie dei due soggetti sono vicine tra loro ma rimangono appena separate, quasi amputate, come se un tempo fossero appartenute allo stesso corpo.

Le opere in I Promise to Listen oscillano in una tensione tra lo splendore dell'amore tenero e il crudo desiderio carnale; chiaroscuro e grisaglia; profondità e superficie; comunicazione e isolamento. Combinati insieme creano una canzone d'amore, un chant d'amour.
